The Dog: Chicago Style
It seems as though a lot of our nation’s regions have their own claim to fame when it comes to hot dogs (Coney Island style comes quickly to mind), so if you’re planning a visit or relocation to the greater Chicago area you might want to make sure you check out its claim to fame: a Chicago-style dog; which is, in essence, a steamed or water simmered kosher-style, all-beef frankfurter that is always served on a poppy seed bun and topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomatoes (slices or wedges) pickled sport peppers and it’s crowning glory of a dash of celery salt. Sure, there are other variants out there (like the offering of cucumber slices), but if you want to experience a purist Chicago moment, go for the traditional fare. And should you think that a “hot dog is just a hot dog” in Chicago and “what’s the big deal,” be warned that the city has more hot dog restaurants than the big three McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King combined. Yep, you read that right combined! There are websites dedicated to the pursuit of the perfect dog in Chicago, so you bet the city takes its dogs seriously. Our suggestion? Hit as many spots as you can and come up with your own short list of personal favorites. And if you happen to not be living in the city but find yourself longing for a familiar taste, check out Lou Malnarti’s online site to order a familiar friend!
